Atrium – Italian Language Institute organises Italian language and culture courses for foreigners. The institute’s home is the ex-seminary of Cagli which dates back to the 1700s. Cagli is 40 minutes from the Adriatic Sea and close to other cities of art like Urbino, Gubbio, Assisi and Perugia.

The choice of Cagli for this activity is the result of the increasing interest among foreigners to learn about the lesser known areas of Italy rich in historical significance, interesting natural landscapes and solid cultural traditions.

Francesco Mansi is the Director of the institute. He holds a Ph.D in Italian Language and Literature from Rutgers – The State University of New Jersey – USA and a Degree in Modern Letters from the University of Urbino (PU) – Italy. After having taught for 15 years in the United States and for several years at various Italian institutes, together with a group of other professors specialised in teaching Italian as a foreign language, he decided to open a special Italian Studies Centre for Italophiles all over the world.

The teaching staff is made up of University graduates, all with a long experience in teaching Italian as a second language both in Italy and abroad.

The didactic method is based on the situation-communications system and uses audio-visual tools and other teaching materials. The courses are articulated in daily language lessons in which the “Whole Language” system is used: grammar, reading, writing, listening and speaking are explored at every level.

All of the lessons are 60 minutes long: the Regular Course consists in 3 lessons of language lessons each morning from Monday to Friday (9:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m.  pause 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.). Afternoon lessons are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays (3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.) and consist in 2 sixty minute lessons of Guided conversation on Tuesday afternoon, and again on Thursday afternoon.

Atrium also organises Intensive Courses in which two additional afternoon sessions of two 60 minute Italian Language lessons each are added the above outlined Regular Course (on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.), for a total of 23 hours.

With a minimum of 5 students, Atrium also activates Optional Courses on Monday and Wednesday afternoons (3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.). The courses available are Art History, Italian Literature, Italian Economy and Politics and the History of the Italian Cinema.

Supplementary Courses are organised based on the students’ requests and with a minimum of 5 students; these courses involve activities of professional and cultural interest like Commercial Italian, Glassmaking, Ceramics and Traditional Cooking.

The language classes have a maximum of nine students; the classes are divided into levels: beginners (A1), false beginners (A2), pre-intermediate (B1), intermediate (B2), advanced (C1) and superior (C2). The classes are formed on the bases of a placement test.

During free time visits are planned with local artisans and on the week-ends historic-artistic excursions are planned.
The Institute office is open to the public from 8:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. from Monday to Friday. Dott.ssa Donna Galletta is in charge of the office. The office has an internet connection to facilitate correspondence with prospective students. Atrium also has an Internet website, www.istitutoatrium.com, which provides information on the courses and accommodations (homestay, private apartments, luxury residences, country houses, hotels) available at the Atrium Institute as well as on the city of Cagli.

For a number of years now, Atrium Italian Language Institute has offered summer courses in Maiori, a city on the breathtaking Amalfi Coast (Salerno).

For infomation, consult the Council of Europe website: www.coe.int

Since 1999, the Institute has offered special CILS (Certification of Italian as a foreign language) and, through an agreement between University for Foreigners of Siena and the City of Cagli, Atrium is a CILS examination centre.
